Patrick Crispen – Google 201

Filed Under (conference, featured speakers) by wenzloff on 16-03-2007

Go to http://www.netsquirrel.com/ for Patrick’s presentation.

Patrick did a great job explaining how Google works and some myths about good searching. He mentioned some myths in searching as well as giving some tips.

1. Be specific – use a good phrase or four to five words.

2. Use quotes for phrases – it is a myth. You only need to use quotes if it is a two-part phrase.

3. Use pluses – not effective.

4. Use the minus – this is very productive

5. Combine minus and quotes as much as possible

Some fun tips that will help you search.

  • Filetypes (include the extension) pirates filetype:pdf/ filetype:ppt
  • Inurl: help you find forgotten url’s
  • Site: limits what web sites you search site:Disney.com. You can use the minus to exclude sites. You can also exclude domains –site:com
  • Cache: good if you need a page, but the site isn’t working cache:Disney.com
  • Define: – this is one I use a lot at home and work.

It will be worth your time to check out his presentation notes. However, I don’t think the notes will do justice to what he had to say. If you get a chance to hear Patrick live it is worth your time.

I can second everything Jim said. Patrick is a great speaker. After only one of his talks I’ll be sure to seek him out at future conferences no matter what the subject is.
